Blogging Tip of the Day: Vol. 8

Today's Blogging Tip: Do you offer to guest blog for people? Hey we all want a day off regardless of what we do for a living or even in my case, what we do for a hobby. I may personally be the relentless type of writer who can produce mindless crap on a moments notice, but it took me YEARS to get there. There was a long time when I just got sick of writing, and would want some time away. Enter the magic of a guest blogger. Sometimes it just takes someone else to give you (and your readers) a break. Of course to be a good veteran of the blog community you have to return the favor.

Now in my case, and perhaps a lot of yours as well, I am in the babbling mode right now. It happens, and sometimes it goes away and other times it does not. I have a few blogs I guest in at, to help out the blog owners, and I happen to be able to pump it out right now. Like the Godfather would say, "There will come a day when I will ask you for a favor," and it really is great to have that time spent in the bank, of good intentions. Oh I'm sorry were you expecting me to talk about all the great exposure, and reaching out to a new audience? Yeah you will get a new reader or two, but what the guest blogging really gets you is street cred, in a crowded industry, and the goodwill of your fellow bloggers. I can't say it enough, but we are all in this together!

The last reason guest blogging is so important to you, is because it gives you a chance to really show off your diversity as a writer. Let's say you do a blog on Goth Opera (and why shouldn't you? Nightwish, Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation totally kick ass) and a friend wants you to do a blog in their "Cute and Fuzzy Bunny" site. You'd probably best be served by not writing about some Gothic Goddess is high heeled boots crushing bunny heads, because it really doesn't show your diversity as a writer. Taking an hour or so to learn the differences between the cute and fuzzy bunnies of the world and writing a simple blog on which one you like best (and not under the Goth Goddess' feet mind you) would make you like like an honest to goodness writer with mad skills!
