Blogging Tip of the Day: Vol. 60

Today's Tip: To tag or not to tag? How often do you tag your blogs? Do you tag your posts when you share them to social media? Of course the answer to the first question is yes, and the answer to the other ones is up to you, but ever since tagging came along, it has grown to be a very important part of sharing information. The obvious question at this point is "how do I tag?" This is where we can have a lot of fun and call it a job.

Whether we want to admit it or not, the #Hashtag was something that our friends at Twitter really made a thing. Facebook, Google and just about every other social media service started integrating these things to catch up. Twitter is still the place where these things are taken really seriously, and all the others are still just pretending, so here is what I have to say about tagging posts. Do it because you want to, but don't assume that your world ends if you don't do it perfectly. I only started tagging my blogs recently, BUT I always tagged my Twitter posts of my blogs. My blogs are pretty popular on Twitter because I tag them to get the right attention. On the other social sites, not so much.

On the other hand my friends and I use #Hashtags on Google to make each other laugh, and you know what happens? People try to figure out what we are up to, and it boosts our popularity. We make up the most insane tag lines like #UnspeakableEvilTuesday which was a joke because it always seemed to be the day that we all guest post on other people's blogs. We of course have #WritingWednesday, #FitFriday and #SerialSaturday which I am sure were someone else's baby, but we really like to tease +Rachel Rennie who made them popular among our group of blogging nare-do-wells. The of course there is #Sharesies which is +Adele Archer 's add to the whole thing.

So to bring this all into something useful to anyone reading this, YES you should tag things. You should especially tag Twitter posts. The rest is all best to use for amusement so that people will get interested in you, because what is the first rule of blogging? Correct, YOU are the brand, and it's important to get people interested in the brand.
